  • It is 2081 and the state thinks everyone should be equal. I had an above average IQ, so now the state controls my thoughts. They put a radio in my ear and every 20 seconds they blast a noise in my ear. I wear a bag of birdshot around my neck also.
  • Poor George! I am lucky. I have a normal IQ.
  • The TV Program shows dancing ballerinas. All ballerinas have the same masks and have bags of birdshot around their waists. This way no one ballerina is prettier than another and no ballerina is more graceful than another. They are all the same.
  • Harrison Bergeron, a 14-year old genius, athletic and handsome, was arrested and taken to jail. He is considered dangerous to the state. Authorities covered his body with scrap metal, shaved his eyebrows, and placed a red ball over his nose.
  • I am the emperor!
  • There was a great noise, and suddenly Harrison appeared in the TV studio. He tore off his scrape metal which crashed to the floor. He tore off his red nose revealing his handsome face. Then he and one of the ballerinas began to dance around the floor.
  • Then, the Handicapper General arrived with a shotgun. Two shots rang out and Harrison and the ballerina wre dead!
  • In his story "Harrison Bergeron," Kurt Vonnegut makes the point that governments can become too powerful and take control over the people. He establishes this by describing a government that tried to make everyone equal. To do this. the leaders had to destroy intelligence so no one could be smarter and destroy beauty so no one could be prettier or more handsome. They did this by regulating the minds of the more intelligent, jailed geniuses and hid faces and bodies behind masks and scrap metal. While some of this is extreme, governments can control the people by controlling the information they are allowed to receive and ridding the country of people who disagree.
