- Atticus is greeted by a group of men concerned about Tom Robinson in the midst of his upcoming trial. They discuss moving him to a different location to avoid scrutiny, but Atticus shuts it down and says to let him stay in the Maycomb jail.
- Atticus: You can keep him for one night, can't you Heck? The trial is on Monday, and those men don't drink much on Sunday anyways. There shouldn't be trouble.
- Heck: I'm just worried about that Old Sarum bunch-
- Deslizar: 2
- Atticus reassures the kids that the people talking to him weren't part of a mob or the Ku Klux Klan. However, Aunt Alexandra still isn't supporting Atticus, and the kids are hardly comforted.
- Atticus: Don't worry, those people were our friends. We don't have to worry about any mobs.
- Deslizar: 3
- After Atticus leaves for town late at night, Jem's curiosity is peaked. So he, Scout, and Dill all get dressed and head into town to see what their father is doing. Once they spot him, Jem is set on going home, but this soon changes.
- Jem: Once we see Atticus, we'll head home and leave him be.
