  • Rainsford is using the ethos appeal to try and establish his credentials so that Zaroff has a higher chance in changing his mind. By gaining his trust, and exerting his knowledge, he is establishing authority to try and stop him.
  • Ethos
  • Based on my extensive knowledge about hunting, I know that this is wrong. The circumstances and differences between killing animals and humans is unreasonable. Believe me, I know better than you, and I've dealt with this for longer than you can imagine.
  • Rainsford is using the logos appeal by trying to explain how hunting humans is not right from his point of view. He is trying to use logic behind his argument to try and change his mind, and show him there is not an alternative to hunting animals.
  • Logos

By putting ideas into his head about his victims having families and lives outside of the island by evoking a sense of guilt, he might be able to convince Zaroff that the people who land on his island are not scum, but are equal.
  • Pathos
  • I can not believe you would even suggest me doing that! Think about their families. Waiting at home for them to return from sea. What if they have children, wives? You need to stop this madness before it turns you into a complete monstrosity.
