  • Hey Dad! My teacher wants me to do a comic strip where I explain the three ways that heat is transferred.
  • Hey son! That's easy. Heat is transferred by conduction, convection, and radiation. Let's go!
  • Wow, this pavement is hot! I can feel the heat coming off of it.
  • That's a great example of radiation. Radiation from the sun transfers heat to the pavement through empty space. Because the pavement is black, it absorbs more heat.
  • A car's radiator is an example of conduction. As the car heats up, the engine needs to cool down. Heat is transferred, via conduction, from the engine block to antifreeze which runs through channels around the cylinder block.
  • Man is it hot outside!I'm coming inside to cool down. Not sure how we could live without air conditioning.
  • Did you know that air conditioning is an example of convection? The cold air is released by the air conditioner. The cold air is denser than the warm air, and so it sinks. The warm air rises and is drawn in by the air-conditioner. A convection current is set up and the room is cooled.
  • Now, there are also heat conductors and insulators. Iron is a conductor used in the manufacturing of car engines for conducting heat. Insulators like rubber, glass, and fiberglass are used in cars to block the heat from the sun and to block the heat of the engine.
  • One last thing, some materials conduct or transfer heat better than others. For example, metals and much better conductors of heat than wood is. This is why we used metal pans to cook so that the food can cook faster.
