- We begin with the birth of Genji and are informed that his mother, Kiritsubo, has a low status at court and is mistreated by the emperor's other wives. Kiritsubo dies when Genji is only three.
- The emperor then finds a woman, Fujitsubo, who closely resembles Kiritsubo, and invites her to court to be his first consort. He married Fujitsubo, who resembles his late wife.
- As a young man, Genji falls in love with Fujitsubo, despite being married to Aoi, who has chosen for him and with whom he does not feel compatible. Then eventually bears him a son. They manage to hide the secret of the child’s paternity from the Emperor
