  • Fabiola Just Arrived to Detroit after her mother wat detained for not being a U.S. citizen.
  • “ I sit beside her and feel her warm arm against mine. It almost feels like my mothers. Almost.”
  • Aunt Jo yelling at Fabiola
  • “ Child, this is Detroit. Ain't no Papa Legba hanging out on corners. Only dealers and junkies you don’t know shit.”
  • “ I want nothing more than to slice away this sore named Dray so I can free Donna and get my mother back.”
  • Fabiola Thinking about Dray and her Mother.
  • Fabiola is just getting her footing down in Detroit and is constantly getting reminders of her mother. In this earlier part of the novel Faibola was very shy and mostly worried about Detroit and how she will fit in since she was born and raised in Haiti a different country. This really shows how she misses her mother and how uncomfortable it is to be without her and she's gonna have to figure out how to live in a separate country without her mom.
  • Fabiola Thinking of how to get Dray caught by the police.
  •
  • “Hes, is digging his own grave and all I have to do is push him in.”
  • “ I am not afraid of dying. Death has always walked close- an earthquake, a hurricane, a disease, a thief and his knife. If Death owns half of my aunt, then I will sell my whole self to it.”
  • Fabolia is adjusting to Detroit and Fabiola likes to go on walks and see a man called Papa Legba on the corner and Aunt Jo clarifies that the streets of detroit are dangerous. Fabiola doesnt take to Aunt Jo's advice and still sees Papa Legba on the corner which shows bravery and strength to not be afraid of the streets of Detroit and risking her life every time she takes a walk to see him.
  • Dray has a gun to Fabiolas head.
  • Dray is a Gang member in the streets of Detroit and also her cousin Donna's abusive boyfriend. Dray is the main antagonist and causes a lot of problems such as selling drugs to kids and hits on Donna. Even though Fabiola just met her cousins after a long time she still feels the urge to protect her family just as she feel the urge to protect her mother. This shows how Fabiola is stepping up and actually willing to do something about the problem instead of just sitting back and watching it happen like she did in the earlier part of the novel.
  • Fabiola goes to get her mother back and Dray taken care of.
  • “ I am not a Pebble in the valley. I am a mountain.”
  • Fabiola reaches out to the detective to help her put away Dray and get him off the streets and away from Donna. I think this shows character development because she sat back for a long period of time not really doing anything about Dray but as time passed she wouldn't let Dray keep doing these awful things. Fabiola actually stepped into action by telling the detective about Dray and trying to get him put away for good and actually creating actions and opportunities to stop the threat.
  • This was a a point in the novel where Fabiola was at her lowest point in the book / at the stage where see was giving herself up. I think this justifies all shes been through and represents all the trouble and scary things she had to do. I also think this scene represents how challenging it is living a life as an immigrant how how immigrants have to go through struggles that other people do not.
  • This line was the last line in the book. This is after Dray and Kasim were killed and when she is going to pick up her Mother from the detention center. I think this shows real character development because even though she went through a lot of stress and death in her life she still finds away to overcome and think of her self as a " mountain " instead of a pebble. I think is also shows that she is regaining confidence and become more relaxed and more adjusted to her new lifestyle.
