  • World War l
  • World War ll
  • Cuban Missile Crisis
  • This broke out in Europe in the summer of 1914 between Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire) and the Allies (Russia, France, Great Britain). U.S. joined when Germany began sinking U.S. ships. The Treaty of Versailles was a peace treaty that ended this war.
  • Korean War
  • The Axis Powers (Germany, Italy, Japan) were against the Allied Powers (U.S., Great Britain, Soviet Union). Hitler believed Germans were a superior race and planned to conquer the rest of Europe. U.S. entered because Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. Germans were defeated and Americans dropped two atomic bombs on Japan, causing their surrender. U.N was formed at the end of the war.
  • Bay of Pigs
  • American spy planes discovered that Cubans were secretly building bases for Soviet nuclear missiles, only 90 miles away from Florida. President Kennedy established a naval blockade of Cuba, preventing any ships from passing through the area. Kennedy threatened to attack Cuba if the missiles weren't immediately removed. Soviet leader agreed and Kennedy promised not to invade Cuba and removed the U.S. missiles from Turkey that were aimed at the Soviet Union.
  • Attacks of 9/11/2001 and the "War of Terror"
  • Truman sent troops under Truman Doctrine to prevent spread of communism. U.S. defeated the North Koreans in South Korea and moved up to North Korea. U.S. troops went so close to the Chinese border that communist China entered the war. The war lasted two more years. Korea remained divided along the same latitude that it had been before the war.
  • In April 1961 Cuban exiles trained to overthrow Fidel Castro under approval of President Dwight Eisenhower. The Cuban exiles landed at the Bay of Pigs. Newly elected Kennedy refused to give air support the day of the invasion and the exiles were defeated.
  • On September 11, 2001, commercial airplanes flew into the World Trade Center in New York City. Al-Qaeda, a terrorist group, was responsible for the attack. Following the attacks, President George W. Bush declared a global War on Terror. When the Taliban, government of Afghanistan, refused to turn over Osama bin Laden, the person behind the 9/11 attacks, President Bush sent U.S. forces to Afghanistan, where they overthrew Taliban rule.
