- Hello! My name is Olivia and I'm from London, England. Today, I'll be talking about my trip to Africa in Timbuktu. To start off, London is in Europe and Timbuktu is a city in the Kingdom of Mali in Western Africa.
- It is now the mid 13th century when I visited Timbuktu. The city was found by the Tuareg nomads. They are a rich country and are recognized for their wealth. I learned that Timbuktu is the empire's most important city because it is near the Niger river.
- Here, London was found by the Romans. York is one of England's most vital cities because it is the center of the Roman administration. After the year 1250, we're currently an active city due to the influence of the Church on the government.
- Let's talk about trade! In Timbuktu, their trade goods are salt and gold.They have a trans-Saharan trade route and exchange with Arab traders.
- London’s industries are controlled by livery companies. Their biggest industry is the Wool industry Wool is one of the city’s trade goods.They trade with Britain and abroad.
- Castles are the most important inventions in Medieval England for defense and castle-dwellers. The longbow is used as a weapon for battles.Technology achievements such as gunpowder and spectacles were developed.
- Timbuktu is best known for their Djinguereber Mosque, built in the early 1300s. The Mali Empire built mosques and sculptures of warriors. They also wrote manuscripts covering medicine and philosophy.
- In London, people mainly believe in Christianity. Saint Gregory brought this religion throughout Europe. People pray to saints and go on pilgrimage. The Church runs most hospitals, schools, and determine holidays.
- In contrast, Timbuktu practice Islam. Mansa Musa made Islam the state’s religion. The people of Timbuktu go on a pilgrimage to Mecca and practice religious traditions of Islamic culture.
- When I was in Timbuktu, I learned that Mansa Musa ruled the Mali Empire and went on a pilgrimage to Mecca. He provided vast amount of gold to 60,000 people on his way to Mecca in 1324. That's insane!
- We cannot leave out the rich history the two cities left behind! In London, June 1215, the Manga Carta was written which was a royal charter of rights for Barons. The reason why is protection from a tyrannical king.
- Overall, my trip from Europe to Timbuktu was thrilling! To get to Africa I had to travel by water on a boat. There were stormy days and I managed to get through plateaus and dry deserts. It took 7 whole days to arrive at the Mali Empire. My journey was very adventurous!
