  • Battle of Antietam
  • Emancipation Proclamation
  • Slaves Fleeing
  • The Battle of Antietam started on September 17, 1862 and turned into the bloodiest one-day battle in American History. General Robert E. Lee and his army tried to invade the North while Union General George McClellan and the Union Army tried to stop him. This battle is what led to the Emancipation Proclamation.
  • Black Men Allowed to Serve
  • Before the Battle of Antietam, Lincoln already had the Emancipation Proclamation drafted, but after too many losses, he had to wait until a decisive Union victory to announce it. The Proclamation declared slaves in rebellion states shall be free. He announced the Proclamation five days after the Battle of Antietam, but fully went into effect January 1st, 1863.
  • Despite the Fugitive Slave Law, many enslaved people tried escaping to Union controlled areas in the South such as Fortress Monroe in Virginia. Many slaves only heard of the proclamation from passing Union soldiers. When the slaves followed the Army, some died from malnutrition, disease, and other causes.
  • By 1863 black men were allowed to serve in the Union Army. The 54th Massachusetts Infantry was one of the first black civil war units. The Infantry is famous for leading white regiments in storming Fort Wagner and showed they are capable of more than just manual labor.
