  • I'm afraid our recent tests and their consequent results have shown that Mr. Jefferson only has a limited amount of time to live before he will pass away.
  • Andrea, I'm afraid that you will have to break this news to him and his wife. As the junior surgeon, it is your responsibility dear.
  • ME?!
  • Good morning, Mrs. Jefferson. I hope you've been having a nice day so far. My name is Andrea, and I am a junior surgeon at the hospital. We have been assessing Mr. Jefferson's progress. Are you fully aware of his type of cancer, and the stage we are at right now?
  • Um, I'm aware he has leukemia, and it's quite bad. Wasn't he in remission?
  • The doctors uncover devastating news as they complete their weekly ward round in elderly care. As the junior surgeon on the team, Andrea is tasked with delivering the bad news to Mr. Jefferson and his wife, Amy. This is her first time completing such a task. Will she able to?
  • He was in remission, yes, however, his cancer returned stronger and quickly entered Stage Five. Unfortunately, it created a tumour, causing metastasis to occur, which is when the tumour breaks off and spreads to other body parts
  • Well yes ma'am, he has leukaemia and he was in remission. Would you like the rundown on what happened or the simple version?
  • You can just explain it to me, thank you.
  •
  • I am so sorry about this news, and I understand how you are feeling in this moment, ma'am. It can be so gut-wrenching to lose a loved one, but you still have some time. We plan on moving him into palliative care, and of course you can stay with him through this time. We'll continue watching him, and monitoring his progress, ma'am.
  • Okay, thank you very much, doctor.
  •
  • At the NHS, we need to be mindful of the feelings of our patients and how we can communicate bad news in the best way possible.
  • When breaking bad news to a patient and their significant others, as a doctor, we have the responsibility of gauging the patient's understanding of the situation and asking them how much information they wish to be told. At the NHS, we value our patient's wishes which allows us to build solid relationships.
  • OH MY!!!
  • Empathy is also a vital skill in medicine.
