- Rainsford and his partner Whitney go to an Island called 'ship trap Island' to hunt for jaguars. After he and Whitney disagree about whether a jaguar can feel emotion, he goes to smoke his favorite pipe. He hears gunshots in the distance and reflectively after his pipe fell in the water he goes after it and falls out of the boat.

- Rainsford swims to an island where he falls asleep. Using his hunting skills he walks a trail toward a mansion. There he meets Ivan and General Zaroff. Rainsford is told that Ivan is deaf and mute. General Zaroff knows Rainsford through his hunting books. Rainsford is welcomed in...

- General Zaroff invites Rainsford inside and they have a good meal. General Zaroff sets off the idea of a high-class, sophisticated man. He lures Rainsford in with his great food and expensive drinks. We are informed that he has been hunting his whole life. He was getting bored of hunting and claimed that the cape buffalo wasn't his most dangerous one. Humans are.

- Zaroff tells Rainsford about his 'dangerous game' which is his sport of hunting humans. Rainsford does not approve of this, but in order to get off the island, Rainsford has to participate in this three-day trial of life or death. Rainsford gets a three-hour head start and a knife. Zaroff gives him food and tells him he only hunts his prey with a small-caliber pistol of limited range. Rainsford is determined to win. But if he doesn't, he dies. On the last day, Zaroff sends the hounds and Ivan to find him.

- Rainsford can not get off the Island without participating in the games. If he wishes not to participate, he has to suffer the wrath of Ivan. Rainsford's three hours start and he begins. He pretends to fake his tracks and hides in a tree. Zaroff finds him quickly though pretends not to. Rainsford then sets up his next trap the Malay Man-catcher. Rainsford took a dead tree branch and then when triggered, it dropped down and hurt Zaroff's shoulder. Zaroff went back to the mansion to tend to his wounds then Rainsford set up his next trap. The Burmese tiger pit. It's a deep pit lined with sharp spikes. This trap killed one of Zaroff's best hounds.

- The last but not least trap, the Uganda Knife Spring Trap. It is the last day of the hunt and Zaroff sends Ivan and the hounds to find Rainsford You find a young sapling that is flexible and can be tied back to the knife. This trap killed Ivan. Rainsford swims back to the mansion and Zaroff is surprised to see him. They have a duel and Rainsford decided that he had never slept in a more comfortable bed.
