- At the beginning of Book 24, we are brought to the underworld. Hermes has to get these dead suitors here, where they are screaming and crying in pain. Their "ghosts trailed after with high thin cries as bats cry in the depths of a dark haunted cavern" (24. 7). This scene is important as it shows what happens to the suitors afterward and looks back to Book 11 with some old characters we've met before.
- In the middle of Book 24, Odysseus finally meets up with his father, Laertes. Instead of explaining his situation and why he was gone for so long to his weeping father, he decided to make a joke saying that he came from "Roamer-Town" (23. 340) and that his name is "Man of Strife" (23. 342). This scene is incredibly important, as it's the first time that these two characters meet in the book at all, but we hear of their relationship all the time. It's a nice ending to their relationship in the story.
- At the end of Book 24, The suitor's families grieve with "wails and moans of grief before Odysseus' palace. And then they carried out the bodies, every family" (24. 460-1) all harboring resentment for Odysseus. They approached Laertes' farm and started an attack on their family. This scene ends The Odyssey and shows the emotion that these families are feeling.
