  • Living in a small neighborhood in the Philippines
  • Moving to Texas knowing nobody
  • My mom owned many pets during my childhood...
  • When I was younger, I lived in a place where everyone knew each other. Houses were clustered, small stores were popular, and kids were playing outside all the time! Going on a walk by yourself would suddenly become a whole family gathering. From this event, the younger me was very expressive and friendly. As soon as I saw someone I knew, I would immediately go up to them and start a very long conversation! A small community impacted my social skills by improving it and bringing out the extrovert in me.
  • Personal Connection to Identity
  • The day my family arrived in Texas, I had a fresh start in life. The thoughts of negative and positive things flooded my brain. Knowing I wasn't fluent in English lowered my self-confidence. Maybe people would laugh at me, or maybe there are people who share the experience as me. Thoughts like these impacted my way of meeting people for the first time. Back in my hometown, I would just walk straight up to new people, but now I am more cautious when talking to strangers. Once I get to know them and find out about our common interests that's when I talk more.
  • Personal Connection to Real World Event
  • Ever since I was born, my mom adored animals. We had at least 7 dogs, 2 birds, 1 bunny, and 2 fish. I remember combing their hair, feeding them, giving them treats, and loving them. Waking up every morning to take care of them was my motivation of getting out of bed. The look on their faces when I went down the stairs made me so happy. My mom's love for animals guided my love for them. This experience in my life has impacted me to always care for those who may be in need, animal or not, and from this, I realize the importance of having a selfless identity.
  • Jaliyah Magno
  • The poem "Identity" by Julio Noboa Polanco reveals that imperfection shouldn't be declared as negative, but a positive thing. Reading this poem had an impact on the way I should think. Every day, I try to become the idea of being "perfect", making no mistakes, and staying proper to others around me. At the end of "Identity", I learned that being imperfect isn't a bad thing. You are free to enjoy your life without the fear of what others might think about you.
  • Staying inside my house 24/7 and isolated from my friends, had deeply influenced my identity. Quarantine shaped my personality from an outgoing person to one that prefers staying alone and at home. Switching from virtual to face-to-face school is when I realized how much I changed and others changed. It was the style of our clothes, the way we talked, and how we interacted with each other. COVID-19 pushed me to show a different side of myself.
