  • The Great opium wars1793
  • MacCarteny does not kowtow which extremely disrespects the Chinese emperor and there is a language barrier so they don't really understandeach other.
  • Hello Emperor,Our country wishes to trade with you
  • Ugh why did you come here you disrupted my dinner
  • After a horrendous first meeting with the Chinese Emperor, McCartney and his crew sailed back to England on a failed mission to trade with china for some very needed tea. They cam back with something many Chinese wanted. Opium. The british sold the Opium for tea and this business was going well until the emperor found out and everything broke loose.
  • Im back to trade. Give me my precious tea!
  • Ok ok calm down you give us opium and I'll give you tea.
  • So the british sold opium to the citizens of china but soon the emperor found out and he banished all of the british things out of the country. The british didn't like this though so the decided to go to war with china. With their incredible Navy they sailed to a small island on the coast of china and nine minutes later captured it. The first Opium war had began and with it a lot of british navy ships. The british wanted just 4 things from china after a lot of wasted time sitting and waiting. Firstly a small part of it called Hong Kong because it was a booming economic growth and it was a good place to sell Opium because of the easy access docks. Secondly they wanted to be able to sell Opium to the citizens. Thirdly they wanted a stack of cash for the cost of the war andfinally they just wanted to be seen as equal to china. The emperor said no and a massive conflict happened again in Canton where the british were outnumbered 50,000 to 6,000 but still won because of bettertechnology and better training. China didn't like this so they finally agreed to sign the treaty of Nanking(aka. The first unequal treaty) and got nothing out of it whereas Britain got everything they asked for.
  • The second Opium war saw more deaths than the first but for the british it was a better war by claiming more and more land in Hong Kong. The british were keen to get a peace treaty signed and didn't fight much more than they had to.
  • Hong Kong
  • After the wars the british signed a deal which made Hong Kong theirs for a 99 year lease. The Hong Kong economy boomed whilst china's communist regime wasn't going as well. Soon a very quick 86 years passed and Britain was getting close to it's deadline so the began talks with china and came to an agreement that Hong Kong would be a Special Administrative Region of china but still continue with the capitalism economy. This agreement was made to happen for 50 years after the 1st of July 1997 and in 1997 the promise of one country 2 systems take place until 2047.
