  • Hey, can you tell me about miners during the Gold Rush period in U.S. history?
  • Sure. For starters, there were about 300,000 people that immigrated to the U.S. when the news of gold and silver spread.
  • Then what happens?
  • Due to the influx of miners, the resources they sought after became very rare. This made it so that miners and prospectors spent laborious hours working only to find little to no gold and silver.
  • How did people mine back then?
  • There were many different techniques, with the most popular ones being panning, using a rocker, and hydraulic mining.
  • Since it was uncommon to find gold, how did people make money?
  • Well, what was ironic is that the miners actually made very little money and dug themselves into debt, while the people selling commodities to the miners made extensive amounts of money.
  • Yes, the miners that didn't strike it rich resorted to more dangerous work in an attempt to make some cash. This encouraged some to work deep underground, where explosions, dust, and gases made it a very dangerous place to be. Some also died from cave-ins resulting from these explosions.
  • That sound like a lot of hard work for nothing. Was working dangerous for the average miner?
  • If people weren't making much money, then when did the others realize it and stop mining?
  • The peak year of the Gold Rush 1849, hence the name "49ers". After that, the influx of people slowly stopped until the Gold Rush ended in 1855.
