  • "Sirens weave a haunting song over the sea we are to shun..." (Homer 690).
  • "...you are to tie me up, tight as a splint, erect among the mast, lashed to the mast..." (Homer 695).
  • From: Homer's The Odyssey
  • "The lovely voices in ardor appealing over the water made m crave to listen and I tried to say untie me!" (Homer 745).
  • At the beginning of, "The Sirens" by Homer, Odysseus is on a ship with his fellow men. They were warned by Circe to be aware of the sirens. Circe warned to block out the mens' ears so that they wouldn't be able to hear the siren's song and tie him up so he won't leave.
  • "...They bent steady to the oars. Then Perimedes got to his feet, he and Eurylochus, and passed more line about..." (Homer 750).
  • Soon after Odysseus gives these instructions, the men begin to near where the sirens are. Odysseus melts were to put on the men's ears and instructs them to tie him up so that the Sirens can't lure him. The men tie Odysseus up and are told not to release him no matter what he says.
  • "Rested on their oars now, peeling off the wax that I had laid thick on their ears, they set me free." (Homer 755).
  • The men and Odysseus reach the feared place where the Sirens are and the men tie up Odysseus tightly. Odysseus wishes to be release immediatly when he hears the Sirens song but his men do not release him.
  • They put more rope on Odysseus as he instructed them to do if he called to be released. The men then rowed on and on until the Sirens were out of earshot and far away from the men. They kept Odysseus tied up until they knew for sure that the horrible creatures were gone.
  • Finally, the men reached safety and peeled the melted wax off their ears. They untied Odysseus and went on their way without any Sirens behind them. Odysseus and his men were finally safe from the terrible Sirens at last.
