  • When the National Party came to power in South Africa in 1948, its all-white government began implementing existing racial segregation regulations right away. Balck South Africans were forced to live in separate regions from whites and utilize separate city services under apartheid.
  • To fight apartheid, Mandela and his ANC partners first adopted nonviolent tactics including strikes and marches. As the head of the Defiance Campaign, which pushed Black people to deliberately break laws, Mandela helped escalate the battle in 1952.

  • Between 9 October 1963 and 12 June 1964, the Rivonia Trial took place in South Africa. Nelson Mandela and the other suspects in the Rivonia Trial were convicted of sabotage and sentenced to life in prison at the Palace of Justice in Pretoria.
