  • Around the 17th century the British parliament started to tax people on the materials that were brought from America to Great Britain because they used this money to help pay for the debt from the French and Indian War, it was called the Townshend Acts. Items such as glass, paper, paint, lead, and tea would be itms that were taxed during the Townshend Acts. This act was similar to the Stamp Act which also occurred around the 17th century which also taxed colonists on pieces of paper that they used.

  • Benjamin Franklin told the parliament to that the colonies were thinking about making their own materials instead of paying duties for the material coming from other places. The items the parliament taxed on , were taxed because Charles Townshend , thought they were hard for the colonists to make by themselves. "While the original intent of the import duties had been to raise revenue, Charles Townshend saw the policies as a way to remodel colonial governments. The Townshend Acts would use the revenue to raised by the duties to pay for the salaries of colonial governors and judges...."(history.com, 2020) When the Townshend duties went into place protests started to arise

  • Soon problems started to rise between the British soldiers and the colonists, until when the British troops shot a group of mad colonists and killed some of them, which is now called the Boston Massacre, On the the same exact day that the Boston Massacre occurred, a Prime Minister of Great had then asked the British Parliament to change the Townshend Acts. "All of the Townshend Acts-except for the tax on tea-were repealed in 1770. The tax on tea would remain a flashpoint and a contributing factor to the Boston Tea Party of 1773." (history.com 2020)
