  • George and Hazel are sitting watching TV, and on the screen were ballerinas. A loud buzzer sounded in George's head his thoughts fled in panic, like bandits from a burglar alarm. This is a simile which shows the affect of the sound on his thoughts. Hazel compliments the dancers, even though they dance averagely.
  • Huh?
  • -Buzz sound-
  • That was a real pretty dance, that dance they just did.
  • Its actually not as fun as you would think
  • George hears another loud noise, and winces. Since Hazel's intelligence is average, she doesn't have a mental handicap that sends sounds to scramble her thoughts. She thinks it would be fun to listen to those sounds, but George knows its not as fun as it seems.
  • Since I don't have a mental handicap myself, I'm curious!
  • Um...
  • I think it would be interesting hearing all those different sounds
  • There was a rapt change in the television program when the news broadcast showed up. A ballerina explains that a boy named Harrison escaped from jail, after being accused of wanting to overthrow the government. Harrison is very intelligent, strong, athletic, and good-looking, so he has many handicaps attached to him.
  • "Harrison Bergeron, age fourteen, has just escaped from jail, where he was held on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government. He is a genius and an athlete, is under-handicapped, and should be regarded as extremely dangerous."
