- Exposition
- She was a big woman with a large purse that contained everything but a nail and a hammer. It had a strap, and she wore it across her shoulder. It was around eleven o'clock at night, and she was strolling alone, when a boy rushed up behind her and attempted to steal her pocketbook...
- Conflict
- "Take up my purse, boy, and hand it over here."
- Rising Action
- "No ma'am"
- Um-hum! Your face is also unclean. I've an excellent plan to wash your face for you. Is there no one at the house telling you to wash your face every day? ”
- "It will then be cleaned this nightfall,"
- Mrs. Jones arrives home from work at 11 p.m. at the start of the story.
- Climax
- Door is wide open. I could sprint down the hall to get there. I could run, run and never come back!
- Roger tries to grab Mrs. Jones' pocketbook but breaks the strap and drops it. She clearly notices it and orders him to pick it up.
- Falling Action
- "When I was younger, I yearned for things I could not have."
- Mrs. Jones decides to take Roger home so she can wash his face after noticing it is dirty. Roger tells her that he needed money to buy blue suede shoes when he gets to her household.
- Resolution
- When Roger has washed his face, he is faced with the choice of running out the door or remaining while Mrs. Jones sits on the day bed.
- Roger is advised by Mrs. Jones that she too has made bad decisions in her life. She prepares food for them to eat before leaving the room. Roger makes the decision that he doesn't want Mrs. Jones to suspect him, so he chooses a seat where she can see what he's doing. When they dine, Mrs. Jones shares her job with Roger.
- Let me tell you about my work at the beauty shop.
- Roger is given $10 by Mrs. Jones to purchase the desired shoes after they have eaten and spoken. Roger resolves to thank her despite being at a loss for words because he is embarrassed. He then departs.
