  • Rising Action
  • Stevenson is a young lawyer who works for SPDC (Southern Prisoners Defense Comity). He started Walter McMillian. Walter was the owner of a successful logging company in Monroe County, Alabama. He was a very well respected black man until he had an affair with a white woman named Karen Kelly.
  • Climax
  • Rhonda Morrison was a wealthy white woman who was murdered in Monroe County. The police wanted to pin something in Walter because of the affair. The court then arrested him because of one testimony by Ralph Myers who was provoked into lying by the police.
  • Falling Action
  • Ralph Myers had testified against Walter even though he hadn't seen a thing. Stevenson proved another testimony false about Walters low-rider at the crime scene. It had been modified six months after the murder. Finally, Ralph admitted to lying about his testimony. This earned Stevenson an appeal. The judge then released Walter.
  • Resolution.
  • Walter was released off death row but Stevenson still wanted to say something. He argued about how easy it was to put people on death row falsely. They then got out of court and Walter said he was as free as a bird.
  • Walter, at first, was happier than he had ever been, but his mental health started to decline. He had dementia and had to stay in a nursing home. He kept thinking he was still on death row.
  • Walter's health kept declining and he soon died. Stevenson spoke at his funeral and said a lot about his accomplishments and how he fought back against the discrimination of the criminal justice system.
