  • We are being forced out of our own land! This isn't fair!
  • The Louisiana purchase was a land deal between the United States and France. President Thomas Jefferson wanted the Louisiana Territory for future protection, expansion, prosperity, and mystery of the unknown lands.
  • Manifest Destiny
  • These paths are poorly marked! Where are we supposed to go next?!
  • We're running out of water and food!
  • Lewis and Clark led a group of 33 soldiers and others through the Louisiana Territory. The United States had just purchased this territory, and President Thomas Jefferson wanted it to be explored. 
  • Oregon trail
  • As a part of Andrew Jackson's Indian removal policy, the Cherokee nation was forced to give up its lands and to migrate to an area in present-day Oklahoma. The Cherokee people called this journey the "Trail of Tears," because of its devastating effects.
  • Gold rush begins 
  • Manifest Destiny was the belief that the United States was sure to stretch all the way across North America. President James Polk was elected in 1844, he promised to gain territory in the West. They faced many challenges when moving west like getting lost on the paths, running out of resources, and overloaded wagons.
  • The Oregon Trail was the major route that people took when migrating to the western part of the US. They went westward because economic problems upset farmers and businessmen. Free land in Oregon and the possibility of finding gold in California lured them westward
  • The California gold rush was when thousands of people rushed to California from all over the world to search for gold. The gold rush began when James Marshall found gold near a mill that was owned by John Sutter on the American River. Sutter and Marshall wanted to keep the discovery a secret, but news spread. Soon people came from all over the United States and other parts of the world, looking for gold. Some people were successful, others weren't.
