- Sonia was born June 25, 1954 in New York, New York. Sotomayor’s father was a manual laborer and her mother was a nurse. Spanish was Sotomayor’s first language and the language spoken at home by her family.
- Sonia married her high school sweetheart but divorced seven years later.
- Sonia Sotomayor is an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS). She is the first woman of Hispanic heritage to serve as a SCOTUS justice. Sotomayor also became the third woman in US history to hold a position on the SCOTUS bench. She was appointed in 2009 by President Barack Obama (1961–).
