Sonia was born June 25, 1954 in New York, New York. Sotomayor’s father was a manual laborer and her mother was a nurse. Spanish was Sotomayor’s first language and the language spoken at home by her family.
Sonia married her high school sweetheart but divorced seven years later.
Sonia Sotomayor is an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS). She is the first woman of Hispanic heritage to serve as a SCOTUS justice. Sotomayor also became the third woman in US history to hold a position on the SCOTUS bench. She was appointed in 2009 by President Barack Obama (1961–).

In her memoir, she wrote that she regretted her decision not to have or adopt children.
