- Many Puritan colonists gathered in front of a prison to see a public punishment
- Chapter 1
- Hester walks out of prison with a sacrlet letter "A" on her chest while holding her infant baby to her side. She stands on the Scaffold as all the townspeople watch

- Hester recognizes an older man in the back of the crowd. A man in the crowd told this stranger all about Hester. Her youth and thinking about her husband was what saved her from death, the usual sentence for adultry.

- back in jail Roger Chillingsworth (stranger in the crowd) comes in to help the baby feel better. Chillingsworth turns out to be Hester's husband. Hester refuses to tell him who her lover is and Chillingsworth promises he will find out. He also makes Hester swear to not tell anyone that he is her husband.

- Hester free from her prison term, stays in an isolated part of town, supporting herself as a seamstress.

- Hester dresses Pearl in finery to make sure society doesn't match her with the colors of the scarlet letter. Hester is afraid Pearl will develop cloud shapes of gloom she herself has, and when Pearl shows temper she clutches her to assure herself Pearl is flesh and blood.
