- Jonas is the 11-year-old protagonist. He lives in a dystopian community in the future with his mom, dad, sister Lily and baby Gabriel.

- Jonas begins to see objects change color, and he realizes that he is special. He is chosen to be the new Receiver of Memory.

- Jonas learns that Gabriel is going to be "released" and plans an escape with the Giver.
- Theme
- Jonas leaves the community with Gabriel and travels to Elsewhere. As they travel, they face challenges such as the search planes, snowy, freezing-cold weather, rough mountains, and starvation. Jonas gives Gabe positive memories to help him survive.
