  • Almost didn't make it.
  • On a warm morning in June the people of the village assembled for the lottery. The children gathered first with the boys on one side making their pile of rocks and the girls on the other side talking amunst themselves. Then the men came talking in a corner. Finally the women who said their hellos and called their kids over.
  • Adams, Alan, Andrson, Bentham, Clark, Delecrios!
  • A man named Mr. Summers ran extra activities inluding the lottery. Mr. Graves followed behind Mr. Summers and placed a stool for the box to go which would carry out the lottery. After Mr. Summers asked for any help from the towns people, two men went to hold the box still while Mr. Summers rummaged his hand around in the shabby, black box.

  • Mrs. Huchensen came late and appoligized, claiming she forgot what day it was. After she was settled in the crowd Mr. Summers started calling out the names of people who wern't there.
  • The crowd quiets down when Mr. summers anouses that he will start calling the names of families to come and get a slip of paper. Everyone seems very nervous but one by one they all get a peice of paper without unfolding it.
  • When the slips of paper are opened it is revealed that it is Bill Hutchinson who has the paper. Then the Hutchinsons were chosen to get new papers. All of the family their own papers and Mr. Summers tells them to open their papers. All of Tessies family showed their paper was blank. Tessies paper had one black dot on it.
  • Everyone grabbed their stones and Tessie put her hands out pleading, saying the selection wasn't fair but it was too late. The villagers had already made their decision and were over her. There was nothing Tessie could do.
