  • A boy named Marty Preston finds a beagle in the woods. He names this beagle Shiloh. He whistled and the beagle came to him and followed Marty all the way home, but Marty was not allowed to have pets.
  • When Marty got home, his father told him that the dog belonged to Judd Travers. Marty did not like Judd for many reasons including the fact that he mistreated his dogs. After they ate dinner, the father returned the dog to Judd and Marty saw Judd kick the dog. Marty told Judd not to.
  • After this, Marty goes on the mail route with his father and finds out that Judd had half starved his dogs in hope to make them better hunting dogs. Later, Marty sees Shiloh in the woods again and keeps him even though he had promised Judd that he would return Shiloh if he found him again. Marty built Shiloh a pen on a hill where almost nobody goes in hope to keep him there without being seen.
  • Every day Marty left his house and went down to Shiloh's pen and bring food. Then one day, Marty's mother followed Marty out of the house and saw that Marty had Shiloh. She told him that Shiloh belonged to Judd. However, his mother promised to keep that dog a secret for one night giving Marty time to think of something to do.
  • That night, Marty heard a shriek, a dog being hurt. Mr. Bakers German Shepherd had jumped over its fence and into Shiloh's pen. The German Shepard had given Shiloh a cut on his ear, a cut on his side, and a big open gash in his leg. When the father found out he immediately took Shiloh to doc Murphy. There, Shiloh had to spend a few nights until he recovered. By the time Shiloh was back at Marty's house, Judd found out. Marty promised to give Shiloh back to Judd in a few days when he was better.
  • Then, Mrs. Preston asked Judd to buy Shiloh because Marty grew to attached to Shiloh, but Judd said that Shiloh was not for sale. Early the next morning after thinking about Shiloh, Marty got up and went to Judd's place to tell Judd that he had to fight for Shiloh. Before he got there he saw Judd kill a doe out of season. Then Marty threatened to tell the game warden, but then they made a deal. The deal was written in the back of a receipt saying that if Marty works for Judd 20 hours he would get Shiloh. Once Marty had worked 20 hours, Judd gave him a better collar for Shiloh, and let Marty go home with the dog.
