- A young woman from the middle class, Mathilde Loisel, is dissatisfied with her life. She fantasizes of a lifestyle that is much beyond her means. She believes she has it tough and lives in poverty since all she does is desire. Monsieur Loisel, her husband, does his utmost to care for his wife and to give her all she desires, but she is never pleased.
- She was as unhappy as if she had once been wealthy.
- Monsieur Loisel returns home with an invitation to a ball at a magnificent castle, but Mathilde is disappointed since she doesn't have a dress or a good piece of jewelry to wear to the ball.
- Nothing. Only I have no dress and so I can't go to this party. Give your invitation to a friend whose wife has better clothes than I do.
- What's the matter? What's the matter?
- Monsieur Loisel advises she take jewels from her wealthy acquaintance, which she does, borrowing an elegant necklace.
- Would you lend me this, just this?
- Why, yes, of course.
- She discovered a magnificent diamond necklace in a black satin box, and her heart began to beat with uncontrollable longing. Her hands shook as she took it. She wrapped it around her neck, over her high-necked dress, and stared at herself in rapture.
- At the ball, Mme.Loisel is a hit, everyone loves her. She danced wildly, with passion, drunk on pleasure, forgetting everything in the triumph of her beauty, in the glory of her success, in a sort of cloud of happiness, made up of all this respect, all this admiration, all these awakened desires, of that sense of triumph that is so sweet to a woman's heart.

- She reaches for the necklace as she walks away and discovers it is missing. After days of research, she and her husband decide to replace it with a similar one. The replacement cost more than they earn, and it will take them ten years to pay it off.
