  • Character vs. Self
  • "There was a strange man in her home- the whites of his eyes seemed enormous...Only his eyes shone. She was looking at a black man." Page 38
  • Character vs Character
  • No!
  • I've got all the money I need, sign the petition...
  • Character vs Nature
  • "...and it began to rain, not light rain showers, but cold, soaking torrents of rain, streaming down her face.
  • When Ezekiel appears in Lyddie's cabin, she is forced to debate with herself, whether or not to turn him in and get the money or not say anything at all. This conflict, character vs self, is demonstrated in this situation because Lyddie doesn't know what to choose in her position, so therefore, she's debating with herself.
  • Betsy and Amelia are arguing about the petition. Betsy thinks they should sign it, because workers at the factory are getting less wages for working more hours. However, Amelia knows that they shouldn't because she could get backlisted and sees no outcome out of doing so. Character vs Character is shown here because two characters are arguing about an important topic in the story;which is workers rights.
  • When Lyddie is traveling to Massachusetts, the harsh rain, cold, and mud stop her from getting there without any trouble. Her carriage even gets stuck in the mud, and she has to push it out.Character vs nature is represented here because it shows how harsh conditions could be while traveling. For Lyddie, it is the very strong rain that toughens her journey.
