  • Social Classes of Colonial Latin America
  • 1st Tier: Peninsulares
  • 2nd Tier: Creoles
  • The influx of new people and new races resulted in new children, and new prejudices, resulting in new social structures.
  • 3rd Tier: Mestizos
  • These were the people who originally came over from Spain, specifically the Iberian peninsula. Because they were the ones who came and colonized, they held the highest power and government authority.
  • 4th Tier: Mulattos
  • The children of peninsulares (both parents) that had been born in the Americas. This made them naturalized citizens of the americas and not the home country of their parents. They could join the army, but couldn't be government officials.
  • 5th Tier: Zambos (Slaves and Natives)
  • The children of Peninsulares and a native american.
  • The children of a Peninsulares and an African
  • The conquered natives, and later the africans that the Europeans used to farm the land. Most of the natives had died of European illnesses, or escaped due to strong understanding of the land, so they brought in Africans, who were considered private property and had no rights.
