- Ponyboy and Jonny now are at the abandoned church. Johnny and Ponyboy cuts his hair (which was what represented him as a greaser) and bleached it so no one could recognize them. Dally arrives and they go to get food where Dally tells them about him and the Gang's conversation with Cherry.
- Dally, Johnny, and Ponyboy chatted about Cherry being a spy and wanting to help the greasers because she wanted to balance their powers and she felt bad for what bob (her boyfriend) did. Johnny tells Ponyboy and Dally that he wants to go and turn himself in and surprises and angers Dally.
- They drive back to the church. On the way, Dally expresses his concern for Johnny, being worried about what jail will do to him if johnny turns himself in, while johnny says that he can handle his mistake and it isn't fair to Ponyboy and the others.
- Dally, Ponyboy and Johnny arrive at the church to find that it is on fire and people are panicking. Ponyboy and Johnny run inside to save the kids at the back. They all suffer some kind of damage but Johnny's is the worst.
- Ponyboy wakes up in a hospital with a few burns and bruises. The doctor tells him that Dally will be fine, but Johnny is in the worst condition. Johnny was struck by a piece of burning timber as it fell, and may have broken his back. Dally gets mad at Ponyboy for making the dumb decision to go inside the church.
- When Ponyboy's family and friends/gang members arrive, they're all concerned for him, Johnny and Dally. They see Darry cry for the first time and this was the first time ponyboy see's that dally actually loves him. They still don't have any news on Johnny.
