- Jeremy is talking with his mom about going over to a friends house today and he's getting a little frustrated. His mom doesn't give him what he sees as an acceptable answer, and that makes him upset. All he wants is to spend time with his friends.
- I feel like I am not being allotted the freedom that I should have. I do well in school, I'm responsible, and I can't go over to Bryan's house?
- Ugh. Give me a minute.
- You know that I don't want you out on a school night.
- Jeremy decides to take a walk to clear his head. It helps him to realize that he's upset, but that his mom is only looking out for him. But he also realizes that he has been wanting to go over to Bryan's house for weeks, and he still really wants to go. But he's feeling much more ready to have a conversation with his mom now. First, he wants to consult his dad.
- I still want to go... let me talk to my dad about it. He'll know what to do
- Jeremy talks to his dad, and he recommends that Jeremy use his "I" statements. If he want's to make sure his mom knows how he feels, Jeremy needs to express his feelings and resolve the tension and conflict.
- Hey Dad. I've really been wanting to go over to Bryan's house but mom keeps telling me no. I just feel a little angry. Is there anything I should say to her?
- You need to tell her how you feel. Make sure you don't tell her what you think SHE'S doing, but rather what YOU'RE feeling.
