  • Exposition
  • Conflict
  • Rising Action
  • Mr. White and Mrs. White live at Lakesnam Villa with their son Herbert. They live in a remote area with gloomy weather and boring days. They are playing chess while waiting for a visitor, Sergeant-Major Morris.
  • Climax
  • Morris arrives and tells stories about how his life was as a soldier. Mr. White reminds Morris of the story he started telling earlier about a monkey's paw. Morris explains that it had a spell put on it by an old fakir to grant three separate men three wishes. Mr. White asks for it but Morris refuses and throws it into the fire to destroy it. Mr. White grabs it and Morris warns him that it does more harm than good.
  • Falling Action
  • When Morris leaves, Mr. White decides to wish for two hundred pounds. The paw twists in Mr. White's hands and he drops it on the floor. They wait for the money to appear and nothing happens, so they assume that it is fake and carry on with the rest or their day as usual.
  • Resolution
  • The next day, a stranger comes to the door to inform Mr. and Mrs. White that their son Herbert was caught in the machinery at his work. He tells them that they will be given 200 pounds as compensation. The Whites are flustered by how their wish came true and mourn the loss of their son.
  • After a bit of persuasion, Mrs. White finally gets Mr. White to wish for Herbert to come back to life. As soon as he wishes the paw falls to the floor and all of a sudden there is a constant knocking at the door. The knocking keeps getting louder and louder.
  • As Mrs. White rushes to the door, Mr. White grabs the paw to make his third and final wish. The knocking suddenly stops. Mrs. White opens the door but no one is there.
