- After Francisco Madero, member of an elite northern family, was elected in 1910, he was imprisoned by Porfirio who refused to surrender the presidency

- If I became president I would have thrown the usurpers from power, recover the rights of all Mexicans, and bring back the heritage of glory our ancestors left us!
- Madero fled to San Antonio Texas where he received support of a diverse array of revolutionary forces as well as completing the Plan de San Luis Potosi: a condemnation of the Mexican oligarchy and a a call to arms in defense of freedom.

- During the long revolution the Mexican people were able to develop a sense of identity and purpose, and many different coalitions from different parts of the country united in the effort against Porfirio.
