  • CHICAGO, 1920s
  • AL CAPONE
  • GEORGE MORAN
  • I agree!
  • JACK McGURN
  • So that's the plan...
  • Prohibition prompted a new era, an era in which rival gangs and gangsters started to take root in many of the United States's large cities, and this includes Chicago- the place where the famous St. Valentine's Day Massacre occurred back on February 14, 1929, at approximately 10:30 a.m.
  • Alright! We're all good.
  • Now by the time of the late 1920's, Chicago had two particular notorious rival gangs ruling their streets, and the city was split between them. The first was led by Al Capone and the second by George "Bugs" Moran (both tried for years to kill the other).
  • You think he'll fall for it?
  • ...and tell him you'll sell it for $57.
  • It wasn't until early in 1929 (winter) when Jack "Machine Gun" McGurn and Capone agreed to finally fund an assassination attempt in an effort to eliminate the Moran gang entirely, after experiencing ongoing problems with his gang, especially after McGurn had recently survived an assassination attempt ordered by Moran.
  • Drop your weapons!
  • As for planning for the massacre, McGurn did so carefully. hewas able to successfully locate the Moran gang's headquarters, which was in a large garage behind the offices of S.M.C. Cartage Company at 2122 North Clark Street. He also hired gunmen and lookouts, as well as acquired a stolen police car and two police uniforms. The plan was now organized.
  • Now it was time to set the trap for Moran and his gang. McGurnbegan to set him up by instructing a local booze hijacker to contact Moran on February 13 and to tell him that he had obtained a shipment of Old Log Cabin whiskey which he was willing to sell at the price of $57 per case.
  • On the morning of February 14,lookouts found the Moran gang assembling at the garage (their headquarters), and they relayed their location to the gunmen. At around 10:30 a.m., the gunmen climbed into a stolen police car, and upon reaching the garage, the four jumped out and they opened fire among the seven gangsters, and all seven eventually died. Moran wasn't involved in the massacre.
