- It is impossible to say how the idea first entered my head. There was no reason for what I did. I did not hate the old man; I even loved him. He had never hurt me....I finally decided I had to kill the old man and close that eye forever!
- The man sneaks into the old man's bedroom to peek at his eye.
- When the old man looked at me with his vulture eye a cold feeling went up and down my back; even my blood became cold.
- The old man was startled by a presence in his bedroom.
- Who's there???
- The old man is killed by the mad man.
- Die!, Die!
- He hid the old man's body underneath the floorboards. He can hear what sounds like the old man's heart still beating.

- The man confesses out of guilt to the police that he in fact killed the old man because he thought the police already knew
- “Yes! Yes, I killed him. Pull up the boards and you shall see! I killed him. But why does his heart not stop beating?! Why does it not stop!?”
