  • I was in my second year of college. I had breezed through elementary and high school, doing the bare minimum necessary to get A's and B's. I was blessed with the ability to be able to do this with very minimal effort. I didn't see any reason to work harder to achieve higher grades, A's and B's were good enough.
  • I didn't bother taking college prep classes such as physics, trigonometry, pre-calculus, etc. Why bother? That same effort continued to be effective through my first year of college, handling a spattering of easy liberal arts classes while maintaining a B average.
  • I have a major in ping pong
  • I decided to switch my major from liberal arts to engineering. In my first semester after switching, I took a required mechanical engineering class.
  • I have decided to change my major to engineering
  • As we approached the first major exam, I put in a couple of hours of prep work with the expectation that my standard effort would be more than enough.

  • Needless to say, I was in shock. In 13 years of schoolI don't think I'd ever received a grade lower than an 80. And, I was now scared that I would fail the class and lose the money I had paid.#160;
  • When the tests came back a few days later, I was floored to find that I had received a grade of 33%; 33 out of 100. The professor barely acknowledged me as he tossed the paper on my desk, probably assuming that this was the last class of his he'd see me at.

  • Well, the world changed that day, as they say. The days of limping along doing the bare minimum necessary were over. This engineering stuff was#160;really hard#160;and assumed a strong foundation of high school mathematics that I lacked, having spent my time improving the back spin on my table tennis serve [which is still very good by the way].
