  • The Köppen-Geiger climate classification is Dfb. The average annual temperature in Grassland is 1.4 °C | 34.6 °F. About 457 mm | 18.0 inch of precipitation falls annually.
  • PLANTS: Grasses dominate temperate grasslands. Trees and large shrubs are rarely found in grassland areas. There are many species of grasses that live in this biome, including, purple needlegrass, wild oats, foxtail, ryegrass, and buffalo grass.
  • Grassland plant adaptations include deep roots, narrow leaves and brightly colored flowers. Grassland plants, particularly grasses themselves, grow from the base of the plant rather than the tips. This enables them to survive the fires that commonly occur in the dry, hot climate of the grasslands.
  • Some of the rare species currently present on Alberta's native plains include Ord's kangaroo rat, Sprague's pipit, swift fox, Great Plains toad, yucca moth, and mountain plover. Common species among the four Natural Subregions include: Carnivores: Coyote, American badger, red fox, swift fox.
  • A few of these adaptations are: Some animals, such as bison, have broad, flat-topped teeth and digestive systems especially adapted to feed on grasses. Many prairie animals have front legs and paws that allow them to burrow into the ground, where they are protected from predators.
