  • “My Love is like to ice, and I to fire”
  • “How comes it then that this her cold so great Is not dissolved through my so hot desire”
  • Contrast is used many times in this sonnet to portray the theme of unattainable love. The speaker uses ice and fire as a metaphor for him and the women he’s fallen for. Not only does the metaphor contain contrasting elements, but the metaphor itself ends up contrasting against the actual relationship. Like fire and ice, the speaker is passionate and fiery, while the woman is indifferent and cold. However, they don’t react to each other the same way fire and ice normally does. His warmth only makes her “ice” harden, whereas her coldness further ignites his “fire.”
  • Contrast
  • The turn of the poem occurs on line 9 of the sonnet. The turn reveals that the speaker isn’t frustrated or upset for being continuously rejected, but rather he is fascinated by it. He finds it amazing that his love for her continues to grow despite being treated with indifference. Likewise, his advances only make her colder, thus causing him to be even more captivated by her. It plays into the theme unattainable love. No matter how much he loves her, he can’t melt her cold shell.
  • Turn
  • “What more miraculous thing may be told, That fire, which all things melts, should harden ice”
  • "And ice, which is congeal’d with senseless cold, Should kindle fire by wonderful device?"
  • ~Theme~Unattainable Love
