  • Slim
  • Effect: Slim is powerful and respected by his peers. He is mentally powerful and doesn't demand people to work; he doesn't need to. Curly isn't respected because he is a jerk and bosses people around. Slims attitude effects the people around him, because they are willing to do that Slim tells them to do. "Carlson, you get the candy wagon hitched up. We'll take 'um into Soledad an' get 'um fixed up," (64). Carlson listens to Slim and hurries out of the room. This shows that Carlson is one of the workers who respects Slim and will do what he says.
  • Speech: Slim speaks with confidence and is always calm. In chapter 3, when Lennie breaks Curly's hand Slim jumps in and makes sure Curly does not tell his father. "I think you got your han' caught in a machine. If you don't tell nobody what happen, we ain't going to. But you jus' tell an' try to get this guy canned and we'll tell ever'body, an' then will you get the laugh," (64). He stands up for Lennie and George even though there new on the ranch. Slim is not afraid of getting in trouble for them either.
  • Don't tell no one what just happened here.
  • Thoughts: Slim is caring and thoughtful to others at the ranch. One example of how thoughtful slim is to others, when he tells Carlton to bring a shovel for Candy's dog; "take a shovel," (48). Slim was thinking how Candy must have felt and had enough respect to tell Carlton to bring shovel to bury Candy's dog.
  • Actions: Slim is not someone who wants to hurt anyone, but sometimes he has to make sacrifices. "She slang her pups last night. Nome of 'em. I drowned four of 'em right off. She couldn't feed that many," (35). No man wants to do the job that Slim did. He had to do it or all of the pups would have died. There wasn't enough food to feed all of them. Slim couldn't take care of them either, because it was expansive. Since this takes place in the Great Depression food is a lot of money.
  • Looks: Slim is a tall, lean man, but that will not stop him from doing his work on the farm. He is the "Jerkline Skinner," (34). He had a face where you couldn't tell how old he was. He isn't physically the strongest in the group, but he gets the job done. "A tall man stood in the doorway," (34). "His hatchet face was ageless. He might have been thirty-five or fifty. His hands, large and lean," (34-35).
