  • Hernan Cortes was sent to explore present day Mexico by the governor of Cuba.Upon arrival, the Aztecs viewed him as a god. Getting some of the enemies of the Aztec, with their help, they overthrew the Aztec empire.Spain was given a lot of land and would use it as a base of operates.The Spanish would begin exploring North and South America for riches after getting a large amount of the Aztecs wealth.
  • In 1519, the Spanish explorer, Pineda, set out from Jamaica to map the Gulf of Mexico. He was first to map and observe the Texas coast. He also encountered another Spanish explorer.

  • When Cabeza de Vaca told about the stories of gold and a large search was set out. Fray Marcos de Niza thought he found it but it was an adobe village. Francisco Vasquez de Coronado was leading a 1000 men to search to city in 1540. They discovered the Grand Canyon, the Pacific Ocean, and Palo Duro Canyon but never found the Village of gold which Spain ignored until 1685.
  • In 1526, Spanish explorer, Cabeza de Vaca was exploring Florida as a member of the Narvaez expedition. The group was lost and forced to build boats to get back to Mexico in 1528. The boats got caught in a hurricane and Cabeza de Vaca ship was wrecked on Galveston island. The Karankawa tribe gave them food and shelter but many of his men died from the harsh conditions of South Texas. From 1528-1536, he would go from tribe to tribe and use some knowledge of healing and medicine to remain friendly. In 1536, he returned to Mexico City and telling stories of fabled cities of gold which start the search for gold.

  • In 1685, A famous French Explorer, La Salle, convinced the King of France to establish a colony at the mouth of the Mississippi River. He set out with 4 ships but one was lost to pirates. When he landed, he was at Matagorda Bay in Texas and not the mouth of the Mississippi River. He also lost a ship at a sandbar in the Bay. He built a Fort and named it Fort St. Louis. He tried to get friendly relations with the local tribes but failed. The colony also faced drought and disease. La Salle decided to go to Mexico get Supplies. While gone, it was attacked by the Karankawa. By 1686, only 45 of the 400 people were alive. In 1687, La Salle and 7 survivors left for French Canada. His own men decided to kill him and only 7 returned.With La Salle presence in the area, It alarmed to Spanish so they built missions in East Texas to keep the French out of Texas. Even though Spain didn't want Texas, they also didn't want another country to occupy Texas.

  • France is in TEXAS!?!?! Thats too far, Time to build mission to keep the French out!
