  • It's my color. I can't even play cards with the guys.
  • Why are you not wanted?
  • She's pretty, isn't she George?
  • You leave her be, Lennie. She's just jail bait.
  • But not us George! I got you and you got me!
  • Guys like us that work on ranches, have no where to go. No family, no place, no one. The loneliest guys in the world.
  • Social Outcasting - Throughout "Of Mice and Men", the author gives a visual of how different classes of the overall population are treated. One example of this would be Crooks explaining to Lennie why he does not let anyone in his room, simply because of the other guys treating him the same way due to his race.
  • Steinbeck not only implements concepts of social outcasts through different races but also through different genders. Social outcasting becomes apparent during the time on the ranch. Through the character of Curley's wife, Steinbeck shows she is treated less respectfully by the guys at various points in the story, with George initially perceiving her as "jail bait".
  • George and Lennie's history before working at the ranch, as well as during the time there, was hopping from one job to another because of Lennie, as well ass constantly moving from place to place. Steinbeck hints at George and Lennie being social outcasts themselves, as their lives before the ranch consisted of having no "true" place to call home nor did they have permanent and sustainable jobs.
