- The urban areas of New York consisted of tight and cramped tenements made entirely of wood, with apartments not even having bathrooms sometimes. The sanitation department also neglected their jobs and the waste buildup was extreme.
- The individual apartments were not nearly large enough to sustain a family, and a lack of bathrooms caused disease to spread very quickly. The fires that would break out were devastating.
- With the sanitation being so poor, disease would spread throughout the streets and garbage choked the roads. The waste would just continue to build as no one cleaned it.
- Jane Addams was a prominent progressive who singlehandedly fixed both issues. She pushed the New York government to make laws about tenements by writing and gathering support, and she also led the "White Wings" garbage collectors.
- The new laws that New York had about tenements required them to have a central courtyard, spacing the tenements out, and required each apartment to have a bathroom. The "White Wing" garbage collectors ensured that the streets were cleaned.
- Without progressives like Addams, America's cities would be much dirtier, and many would likely not even exist any more as they would have been burned down in the past. Disease would also run rampant as a combination of the few bathrooms and the abundance of garbage.
