- One of the major events in the book is Star's friend, Kahlil is shot by a racist police officer after being pulled over and was asked to stay out the car for no reason. This causes much speculation about if the cop did it intentionally or if he did it as self defense.
- Another rising action in the story is how the cop got off free with no consequences. Star feels like she needs to change that. She feels she needs to show the world that he shot a innocent teenager. She decided to start a group to get justice for Kahlil.
- Star was interview by the police at the police station about what happened that night. A protest started after after everyone found out Kahlil was being accused of being a drug dealer.
- Riots came and dangerous ones too. Star and her family all joined the riot and it ended with the drug lords lighting there store on fire and rules were broken such as snitching.
- After the dangerous night star uses her experience throughout her life to come through with hard decisions she had to face. Even with Kahlil's death, she uses that upsetting and traumatic experience to move on.
