  • George told me if I done anything bad to go to the river!
  • I know who done this... it was Lennie
  • After Lennie kills Curley's wife, he realizes that George will be upset at him. Lennies actions will make George punish him by making sure he doesn't get to take care of the rabbits. This worries Lennie and makes him remember that when he is ever in trouble, he needs to go down to the brush by the river.
  • I have to get to him before Curley does...
  • After Lennie runs away from the barn, George and Candy finds the wifes body. George realizes that everyone will be searching for him soon enough, so Candy and George come up with a plan that keeps Lennie safe from the others. George steals Carlsons luger and heads out to search for him, while Candy stays back to show Curley into the barn.
  • No... you ain't done nothin wrong Lennie
  • My lugers' missing too! Lennie must have taken it.
  • Are you mad at me George?
  • Once Curley, Carlson, and Candy go into the barn and find Curley's dead wife, Curley immediately realizes that this had to be Lennies doing. Candy is trusted to keep Georges plan a secret, so he tries not to say anything about where they should look. However. Curley is so furious that he gathers all of the men on the ranch to search for Lennie.
  • We're gonna have a little farm... and you get to tend to the rabbits...
  • As Lennie runs down to the river, George is following, but far behind. George understands that Curley will do everything in his power to punish Lennie for all of his troubles, and Lennie will cause even more issues once he comes into contact with Curley. This lead George to understanding that the only way to keep Lennie safe from the others is to kill Lennie himself.
  • George finally catches up to Lennie in the brush by the river, but Lennie is upset and doesn't understand what he did wrong. George makes sure that Lennie knows it wasn't all his fault and he's going to be ok. Once the men go out on their search, Carlson realizes his luger was stolen, and assumes it was Lennie.
  • George tries to keep Lennie hidden from the others, and has Lennie turn towards the river so he won't be able to see the gun in Georges hand. Lennie is worried that he won't be able to take care of the rabbits after what he did, but George reassures him and talks about their plan of owning a farm, making Lennies last moments consist of some of his best thoughts. Finally, George raises the gun towards the back of Lennies head, and pulls the trigger. The men from the ranch hear the shot, and Slim comes over to George walking away from Lennies dead body.
