- The theme of this story is that fear can turn people into monsters. At the beginning of the story, everyone was afraid of being accused of such a thing, so they all pointed fingers at each other, making the problem even worse, an example of everyone pointing fingers at each other is when the lights in Les Goodman's house turn on and everyone didn't know who to suspect. Near the end of the story, Charlie saw a mysterious figure in the shadows and thought it was the monster, so out of fear, he shots the figure, just to find out it is not, since he shot someone out of fear, it made other people suspect he was the monster. And, at the end, everyone starts violently fighting, not knowing who the true alien (s) are, we never knew what happened near the end of the story, but we can mostly accuse that everyone fought verbally and physically fighting one another. The people of Maple Street became afraid of what would happen to them, but their true fear is each other. These are the reasons that Fear turns people into monsters is the theme of this story.
