- Askum
- Africa has diverse environments across the continent. The first nomadic groups originate from Africa; some of those groups still exist today. A social hierarchy based on lineage were known as "Stateless Societies". A major technological advancement was the production of iron.
- North and West African Civilizations
- Across Africa there were many reasons for tribes to migrate; such as, depletion of resources, religious persecution, war, etc. When groups migrate there is a geographic spread of culture language, religion, art.
- Eastern City-States and Southern Empires
- Askum originates back to 100AD. Askum gained power because of its access as a trading hub on the eastern coast. Askum is the only known ancient African empire to have written language. Their religion started out polytheistic and transitioned to christianity. The fall of Askum took place in the early 700's AD by Islamic invaders.
- Many states across Africa converted to Islam after the death of Muhammed. The Ghanian and Mali empires expanded because of their supply of gold. Songhai rose to power because of its access to important trade routes.
- CIty-States on the east coast greatly relied on trade. Islamic religion spread when muslim traders came to the east African coast. Zimbabwe became an empire in the 1400's and thrived until its resources were exhausted. The Mutapa empire was supported by its exportation of gold. It was conquered in the 1500's by European invaders.
