- The Narrator and his parents thought his brother was going to die, thinking he was not going to make it that long.
- They were proven wrong as his brother grew older. Instead of calling his brother his actual name, William he calls him Doodle from the way he crawled reversely like a doodlebug.
- When the family were eating dinner they heard a strange noise outside which turn out to be a bird slowly dying, the type of bird was a scarlet ibis. Doodle was the one who buried the bird.
- He later on teaches his brother how to walk not wanting to have a crippled brother. The Narrator cried of happiness knowing that his brother was able to stand up for only 2 seconds.
- He even teaches his brother how to run and swim until Doddle face started to turn blue and can't go much farther he'll collapse and cried.
- The theme of this scene is questionable on how this type of bird got there to begin with. The symbol of this theme could be death from how this bird could not survive from that habitat just like how Doodle has been sick throughout his whole life.
- After the storm has die down, running away from it leaving his brother behind. He found his brother dead laying awkwardly and looked fragile.
