  • After the fall of the Roman Empire in A.D. 476, Europe entered the Middle Ages/Medieval Times. A wise and diligent Frankish ruler by the name of Charlemagne came into power and Western Europe thrived.
  • After Charlemagne's death in A.D. 814, his only surviving son, Louis the Pious, ascended to the throne. The empire began to deteriorate during his rule. After Louis's death, his three sons divided the empire amongst themselves. naming them the East, West, and Middle Kingdoms.
  • RIP
  • Charlemagne
  • Charlemagne's descendants ultimately proved themselves to be poor leaders, and fought each other rather than being productive by uniting against threats, among other things. By 870, the Middle kingdom had fallen and only the East and West kingdoms remained. Europe then endured a series of invasions. Order and stability were lost, replaced by battle and bloodshed. People were terrified of the thieving tribes that would regularly set foot on their ground. A solution was absolutely necessary.
  • ...and thus Feudalism was created, a figurative light at the end of the tunnel. It was put into effect due to the absence of a centralized government. Wealthy land owners took up governing their own small "city-like" estates. People would perform a variety of services for them in return for protection, life was good. It was a popular and commonly used concept in the middle ages, and was a rather effective solution to the abysmal state of the empire, wholly attributed to Charlemagne's descendants. Through this, they were able to protect themselves from invasions (this is specifically in regards to the knights, which will be elaborated on) and were able to engender a system of social and political order.
  • AND NOW ONTO THE SPECIFICS OF RELATIONSHIPS IN FEUDALISM~ WHAT FUN!
  • First off, some basic terminology. A lord in the upcoming context is the person who will provide land to the person willing to do acts of labor in exchange for protection. The term "Vassal" refers to the person who carries out that labor.
