Rodrick Usher sent a letter to the narrator saying that he wanted company and wanted him to help him overcome a mental illness that he has been experiencing. The narrator arrived at the Ushers, he realized a fissure starting from the roof and a zigzag pattern.
Usher tells the narrator that Madeline is ill and is slowly dying. Also that they are the last two living ushers in the world. The narrator briefly sees Madeline walk by.
Days after the narrator's arrival, Usher informs the narrator that Madeline has passed. Usher asked the narrator to help him put Madeleine in the tomb the narrator then noticed that Madeline's cheeks were still blushed. He found out that Madeline and Usher were twins.
Usher comes clean to the narrator and tells him that he has been hearing Madeline's voice screaming and calling his name and supposed that they have buried Madeline alive and she is reaching out for help. He then said that Madeline is going to burst through the door soon. The narrator told himself that Usher is just grieving and reads to him to try to calm him down.
Seconds later, Madeline bursted open the door covered in water and blood and fell onto Usher which made them both die together. Usher died most likely because of shock. Narrator leaves the house as fast as he can as he realizes that the house is slowly falling down
The narrator made it out just in time to see the house of Usher collapse and become nothing. The House of Usher is now gone forever.
